Halong Bay Luxury Cruise Guide

A Halong Bay luxury cruise is the top tier of overnight trips on the bay: a private balcony, a bathtub, a pool deck and all meals in one card price. This guide explains what the 5-star and 6-star labels actually mean, what you get for the money, and which surcharges appear on top. It compares the luxury overnight cruises on this site from $125 per person, all of them on Ha Long and Lan Ha Bay. If you want a cheaper night on the water, the Bhaya Classic Overnight Cruise at $120 per person caps the group at 10 guests. The bookable tours are compared on Ha Long Bay junk boat cruises.

Quick answer Luxury cruises in short

A Halong Bay luxury cruise starts at $125 per person for two days with a private balcony and bathtub. Vietnam has no official star rating for Ha Long cruises, so 5-star and 6-star labels are set by the operators. Standard packages include meals, cabin, kayaking and cave visits. Expect extras for the Hanoi transfer, peak season dates and government VAT.

Key takeaways

  • The Infinity Pool Overnight Cruise at $125 per person is the lowest-priced luxury listing here, with a four-season pool, spa, sauna and a bay-view bathtub in every cabin.
  • The Balcony Suite Overnight Cruise at $150 per person puts a private balcony and bathtub in even the base Junior Suite at 32 square meters.
  • See the official routes and bay fees in the homepage section on routes and fees so you know which government tickets sit behind your cruise price.
  • Plan around the season with the homepage section on weather and storm closures, because boats stay in port when storms close the bay.

What Luxury Means on the Bay

The star labels are marketing, not a licence. What separates the top tier is cabin size, balconies, bathtubs, pools and what the price already covers.

The Star Labels Are Set by the Operators

Vietnam has no official star rating for Ha Long cruises. The 3-, 4-, 5- and 6-star labels are assigned by the operators themselves, and there is no standardised, independently verified star system to check them against. One guide lists the typical ladder as 3 star budget, 4 star mid-range, 5 star luxury and 6 star ultra-luxury. So a "halong bay 6 star cruise" is the operator's own claim, not a government grade. Use the label as a starting point, then compare cabin sizes, what is included and the real surcharges on top.

The Quang Ninh authorities do regulate the fleet in other ways. The province ran 508 cruise ships on Ha Long Bay, many wooden-hulled, and aims to replace all wooden vessels with steel or equivalent material by 2030. Licensed boats must carry life jackets, emergency equipment and a professional crew under Vietnamese maritime rules, with fire systems, VHF marine radio and emergency exits required. Oversight sits with Vietnam's Ministry of Transport and the Vietnam Maritime Administration.

Cabins, Balconies and Bathtubs

Cabin size is the most measurable difference between tiers. One operator guide sets the benchmarks as follows: entry-level cabins run 12 to 18 square metres, mid-range 18 to 25, quality 4 to 5 star 25 to 38, and luxury 38 to 60 square metres. The Balcony Suite Overnight Cruise starts its Junior Suite at 32 square meters with a private balcony and a bathtub, and the Infinity Pool Overnight Cruise puts a bay-view bathtub in every balcony cabin.

A private balcony and a bathtub are the two features the luxury listings here lead with. Smaller shared spaces add the rest: the Infinity Pool Overnight Cruise carries an infinity pool, a gym, a spa and a sauna.

What the Price Usually Includes and What It Does Not

Standard overnight cruise packages include meals, cabin, kayaking and cave visits. Drinks, spa treatments and Hanoi transfers are excluded on some packages. On an overnight Lan Ha cruise from Hanoi the transfer takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours, and a 1-night cruise gives 4 to 5 waking hours on the water versus 12 to 14 on a 2-night. An overnight cruise gives 16 to 20 hours on the water, against about 4 hours on a day trip.

Government bay fees are separate from the operator's price. The overnight ticket on route 2 costs VND 550,000 for one night and VND 750,000 for two nights. Some luxury listings bundle these fees and taxes in and say so, others charge them on top. Tipping is voluntary and not customary in Vietnam. One guide suggests USD 12 to 22 per person for a 2-day cruise and USD 22 to 35 for 3 days 2 nights, while another suggests a shared envelope of 100,000 to 200,000 VND per person on a 2-day cruise. About 30 percent of luxury cruises add a 5 to 10 percent service charge, so check whether your boat already carries one.

Safety Rules to Check Before You Book

Luxury finishes mean nothing without a sound hull. In 2011 the Truong Hai boat sank at anchor in Ha Long Bay and 12 foreigners died, with police citing a cracked board in the engine room that let water in. On 19 July the Wonder Sea, a 24 m boat licensed for 48 passengers, capsized at about 13:30 near Dau Go Cave in a sudden thunderstorm that may have formed a local tornado. Wikipedia's final count is 39 dead and 10 rescued, and it was reported as Vietnam's deadliest naval accident in more than 20 years.

After a tour boat fire on 27 February involving the Signature QN-7269 with 41 people aboard, all evacuated safely, the Deputy PM ordered inspection of the whole Ha Long Bay fleet on 2 March, with any boat failing standards to be suspended at once. For your own booking, confirm the boat has a valid operating licence, life jackets for all passengers in your cabin size, fire systems and emergency exits, and ask how the crew handles storm closures. Boats stay at the pier when the bay authorities close the water, so a flexible cancellation policy is part of a luxury booking, not an extra.

The Luxury Cruises Compared

The luxury overnight cruises here cover the top tier on Ha Long and Lan Ha Bay. Prices are the card prices on this site, in US dollars per person, with the extras each listing charges on top. Every cabin here comes with a private balcony, and the listings that state a bathtub say so in the table.

Price, Cabin and Extras at a Glance

The table compares the luxury cruises by card price, cabin type and the extras beyond the base fare. All of them run on Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay itineraries. Most list their Hanoi transfer cost openly, which is the most common hidden add-on when you start in Hanoi.

Taxes and fees are handled differently on each listing, so read the extras column before you compare the headline prices. Figures come from the tour cards on this site.

Which One for Whom

If the lowest all-in price matters most, the Infinity Pool Overnight Cruise at $125 includes taxes and the peak surcharge on new bookings, and it is the only one here with a four-season infinity pool, spa and sauna on board. The 2-Day Lan Ha Balcony Cruise at $126 is the most reviewed overnight trip on this site at 6,135 reviews with a 4.8 rating, and it bundles all entry fees, which removes the most common surprise.

If you want a junior suite with a pool on board, the 2-Day Junior Suite Cruise at $146 pairs a balcony with the pool, but count on $25 more per person for the Hanoi transfer. The Balcony Suite Overnight Cruise at $150 has the clearest cabin spec, a 32-square-meter Junior Suite with bathtub from the base tier, and it includes the entrance fee, taxes and on-board insurance in the fare. For the deep version, the 3-day Lan Ha Bay Cruise at $301 adds a second night, a bike ride to Viet Hai village and a beach afternoon at Ba Trai Dao, though its $35 VAT and $25 peak charge come on top. Solo travelers should price the single supplements first: $80, $90 or $180 depending on the boat. If none of these fit, the Overnight Cruise, Choose Your Bay listing at $149 carries boat options from 3-star to 6-star across all three bays. A traditional wooden junk is a different experience altogether, covered on the Oriental Sails Junk Cruise page.

What the From-Price Leaves Out

The card price is a from-price for one person in the cheapest cabin, usually sharing. These are the charges that sit on top, taken from each listing's own surcharge notes.

Transfers From Hanoi

Most Ha Long Bay luxury cruise listings exclude the road transfer, and the Hanoi drive takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours on the expressway. The 2-Day Junior Suite Cruise quotes $25 per person for a shared round-trip transfer from Hanoi or Ninh Binh. The Balcony Suite Overnight Cruise charges $30 by shuttle bus or $35 by limousine, with a $20 limousine option to or from Ninh Binh.

The Infinity Pool Overnight Cruise also prices the round-trip shuttle from Hanoi Old Quarter at $25. The 2-Day Lan Ha Balcony Cruise shows a conflict inside its own listing: the header says pickup included while the includes list prices the transfer at $25 per person, so confirm before paying.

CruiseTransfer charge
Balcony Suite Overnight Cruise$30 shuttle or $35 limousine, per person round trip
2-Day Junior Suite Cruise$25 shared round trip
Infinity Pool Overnight Cruise$25 shuttle round trip
2-Day Lan Ha Balcony Cruise$25 per the includes list, header says included
3-Day Lan Ha Bay Cruise$25 round trip, Ninh Binh by email request

Government VAT on the 3-Day Cruise

The 3-Day Lan Ha Bay Cruise is the only luxury listing here that adds government VAT on top of its $301 card price: $35 per person. It also carries a peak season charge of $25 per person from October 1 to April 30. The single cabin costs $180 extra.

The 2-day listings handle tax differently: the 2-Day Lan Ha Balcony Cruise states taxes are included for bookings made from June 26, 2026, and the Infinity Pool Overnight Cruise states taxes and the peak surcharge are included from July 1, 2026. On earlier bookings, read the surcharge line.

Holiday and Peak Surcharges

Holiday nights bring gala dinner or fixed surcharges. The 2-Day Junior Suite Cruise charges $40 per person for the Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve gala dinner and $5 per person at Lunar New Year. The Balcony Suite Overnight Cruise adds holiday surcharges on December 24 and 31, Lunar New Year, April 30, May 1 and September 2, amounts not stated.

The Infinity Pool Overnight Cruise lists December 24, December 31 and Lunar New Year from February 5 to 8, 2027, amounts not stated. A New Year surcharge also applies on some day cruises, so check the holiday dates before you book.

Solo Supplements

Travelling alone on a Ha Long Bay luxury cruise costs more. The 2-Day Lan Ha Balcony Cruise adds $90 for a private single room. The 2-Day Junior Suite Cruise adds $80.

The 3-Day Lan Ha Bay Cruise adds $180. The Bhaya Classic Overnight Cruise applies a single supplement to the odd person in a group with odd numbers, amount not stated.

Tipping and Drinks

Tips and drinks are never in the card price. One operator guide suggests $12 to 22 per person for a 2-day cruise and $22 to 35 for 3 days 2 nights, while another guide suggests a shared envelope of 100,000 to 200,000 VND per person. A third guide puts it at about 10 percent of the cruise price, which conflicts with the fixed figures, and one operator says tipping is not customary on luxury cruises.

About 30 percent of luxury cruises add a 5 to 10 percent service charge, and where that appears, the tip box is voluntary. Alcoholic drinks are excluded from standard packages, with beer quoted at about 60,000 to 100,000 VND on Lan Ha cruises.

Is a Luxury Cruise Worth It

Weigh the extras section against what an overnight on the water gives you: 16 to 20 hours on the bay, versus about 4 on a day trip with 6 hours of driving.

What we genuinely like

  • A 2-night cruise gives 12 to 14 waking hours on the water, against 4 to 5 on a 1-night trip and about 4 on a day trip, so the money buys time on the bay, not just a cabin.
  • The Balcony Suite Overnight Cruise puts a private balcony and bathtub in its 32 square meter Junior Suite at $150.
  • All entrance fees, meals and kayaking or bamboo boat trips are inside the card prices of the Infinity Pool Overnight Cruise and the 2-Day Lan Ha Balcony Cruise, so the on-board surprises are few.
  • The most reviewed luxury trip, the 2-Day Lan Ha Balcony Cruise, holds a 4.8 rating from 6,135 reviews, and the Infinity Pool Overnight Cruise holds 4.9 from 2,807.

The honest downsides

  • The real total runs well above the from-price: the 3-Day Lan Ha Bay Cruise adds $35 VAT, a $25 peak charge from October 1 to April 30 and a $25 transfer to its $301 base.
  • The 5-star and 6-star labels are set by the operators themselves, because Vietnam has no official star rating for Ha Long cruises.
  • Solo travellers pay $80 to $180 extra for the same cabin.
  • Holiday nights carry gala dinner surcharges of up to $40 per person on top of the card price.

Who it's NOT for: A luxury cruise is not for travellers who only have one day in Hanoi, because a day cruise such as the Deluxe Day Cruise from Hanoi at $40 includes the shuttle bus and entrance fees and visits Sung Sot Cave, Luon Cave and Ti Top Island.

Dos and Don'ts

Five checks that protect your money and four that protect you, all drawn from the listing terms and the safety record of the bay.

Do

  • Do price the full total before booking, because the from-price leaves out transfers of $25 to $35, peak surcharges of $10 to $25 and, on the 3-day trip, $35 VAT.
  • Do check whether taxes and the peak surcharge are already inside the price, because the Infinity Pool Overnight Cruise includes both from July 1, 2026 while the Balcony Suite Overnight Cruise adds $10 per person from October 1 to April 30.
  • Do book a 2-night itinerary if you want more time on the water, since a 2-night cruise gives 12 to 14 waking hours on the water against 4 to 5 on 1 night.
  • Do confirm the kayaking spot with your operator before the trip, because kayaking runs only where the bay authorities allow it.
  • Do carry small notes for the crew tip box, because guides suggest $12 to 22 per person for 2 days and tipping stays voluntary even where a 5 to 10 percent service charge already applies.

Don't

  • Don't trust the star label as an official rating, because Vietnam has no standardised, independently verified star system for Ha Long cruises and operators assign 3- to 6-star labels themselves.
  • Don't board without checking the life jackets, because licensed boats must carry life jackets for all passengers, fire systems, VHF radio and emergency exits under Vietnamese maritime rules, and the Wonder Sea capsized in July with 39 people killed.
  • Don't count on the boat sailing in bad weather, because the bay closes when storms arrive and sudden thunderstorms have been blamed for capsizing, so keep a flexible day around your cruise.
  • Don't pay a holiday-night surcharge you did not plan for, because December 24, December 31 and Lunar New Year carry gala dinner surcharges of up to $40 per person on several luxury listings.
