Ha Long Bay Junk Boat Cruises

Ha Long Bay holds 1,969 limestone islands and islets, and nearly every boat sailing among them today is an engine-powered cruise boat built in junk style. What separates one Ha Long Bay junk boat cruise from another is a day or a night on board, which bay it sails, and whether the Hanoi bus is in the price.

Quick answer The pick, the lowest price and which bay

A Ha Long Bay junk boat cruise costs from $35.74 all in for a day trip and from $120.00 for 2 days and 1 night, per person. The harbour sits 150 to 170 km from Hanoi, 2 to 3.5 hours each way, so the transfer matters as much as the boat. Prices below are the listings' lowest adult rates, and many sell the Hanoi bus as an extra.

What a Night Adds

A night on board adds sunset on deck, squid fishing or a cooking class after dinner, sunrise tai chi, and a second morning stop such as Dark and Bright Cave or Trung Trang Cave on Cat Ba Island, depending on the boat. The boats reach three waters: Ha Long Bay itself, quieter Lan Ha Bay south of it, and Bai Tu Long Bay northeast, the least crowded of the three. Boat size varies more than on day trips.

The Bhaya Classic caps at 10 guests, the Oriental Sails junk at 20, the Renea small boat at 25, while the Balcony Suite cruise takes up to 45. Watch the add-ons. Transfers from Hanoi run $20 to $35 per person depending on the listing and vehicle, the Balcony Suite cruise adds a $10 peak surcharge from October 1 to April 30, and the Bhaya and Oriental Sails listings charge nothing back inside 2 days of departure.

The 3-Day Cruise

One listing runs 3 days and 2 nights. The 3-Day Lan Ha Bay Cruise costs $301 per person, plus $35 per person in government VAT and a $25 peak charge from October 1 to April 30, with the Hanoi transfer $25 extra. The second day moves to a day boat for a cycle to Viet Hai village and an afternoon at Ba Trai Dao Beach.

Two nights suit travelers who want to reach farther into Lan Ha Bay without a long drive back on the first evening.

What a Junk Boat Is Today

The word sells the trip, but the boats have changed. Here is what the type was and what sails now.

The Original Junk

The word junk comes from Portuguese junco, borrowed from Malay jong. Chinese junks carried battened sails by the 12th century. The hull design is distinctive: a flat bottom, no keel, and watertight bulkheads instead of ribs, which limits flooding if the hull is holed.

Junks were traditionally built with iron nails and clamps and steered with a central rudder. That engineering, not the curved prow alone, is what made the type seaworthy on Asian trade routes.

The Boats on Ha Long Bay Now

Nearly every cruise boat on the bay today is engine-powered, and sails are often kept for show. Two styles exist side by side: the wooden junk look, typically built from Vietnamese hardwood, and newer boutique boats built of steel in a junk style for durability. Small boutique boats range from 1 cabin to about 10 cabins and carry from 2 to about 20 guests.

Licensed boats must carry life jackets, emergency equipment and a professional crew under Vietnamese maritime rules. Only one listing on this page describes its boat as a traditional-style junk, the Oriental Sails Junk Cruise, with deluxe cabins furnished in classic Vietnamese style. The other listings describe modern cruise boats, however junk-flavored their names.

Ha Long, Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long

Three bays share one limestone seascape, and the water your Ha Long Bay junk boat cruise sails shapes the whole trip. This table compares what each bay offers and which bookable cruises on this page go there. Each bay has its own page: Lan Ha Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay and Cat Ba Island.

Which Water Do You Sail

The three bays compared on the province, the harbours, the crowds and the cruises on this page that sail each one. The figures come from Vietnamese tourism sources and the tour listings. Every bay runs day trips and 2-day 1-night overnight cruises.

Ha Long Bay is the busiest and the classic route. Lan Ha Bay sits south of Ha Long Bay and is home to Cat Ba Island. Bai Tu Long Bay lies northeast of Ha Long Bay in the Gulf of Tonkin and is the least crowded of the three, while Ha Long is the most touristy.

Ha Long and Lan Ha cruises can both leave from Tuan Chau, Lan Ha cruises can also leave from Cat Ba Island, and Bai Tu Long cruises typically depart from Hon Gai in Ha Long city.

Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay

Lan Ha Bay has about 400 islands in about 70 square kilometres of core water and about 139 beaches, according to one operator guide. Another guide says the bay covers more than 7,000 hectares, with 5,400 hectares under Cat Ba National Park management, so the counts differ by source. It is often called the best bay for kayaking, and the Dark and Bright caves sit at its boundary with Ha Long Bay.

From 2026 the Cat Ba bays carry a separate Hai Phong admission of VND 120,000 per adult. Bai Tu Long Bay lies northeast of Ha Long Bay and its main ports are Hon Gai, about 165 km from Hanoi, Ao Tien in Van Don, about 180 km, and Vung Duc in Cam Pha, about 170 km. Key stops include Vung Vieng floating village, Cong Dam, Thien Canh Son, Cap La and Ban Chan. The Taliya Lan Ha Bay Day Cruise spends 7 hours across Ha Long and Lan Ha, and the Bai Tu Long Bay Small Boat Cruise is the small-boat way into the quietest bay.

Ha Long Bay Itself

Wikipedia counts 1,969 islands and islets in Ha Long Bay, of which 989 have names. Only about 40 of them are inhabited, and many limestone islands rise 50 to 100 metres above the water. Other counts differ: one guide gives 1,133 islands inside the heritage boundary, the IUCN says about 1,600 islands and islets, and another guide repeats the 1,133 figure for Quang Ninh and Hai Phong combined. The core zone holds about 775 islets and covers 334 square kilometres of the 1,553 square kilometre bay.

UNESCO inscribed Ha Long Bay on the World Heritage List on 17 December 1994 and extended the boundary in 2000 for geological value, under criteria vii and viii. On 16 September 2023 the World Heritage Committee inscribed the Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba Archipelago extension, making it Vietnam's first inter-provincial World Heritage site with biodiversity criteria added, so the site now lists criteria vii, viii, ix and x. The name Ha Long means descending dragon, and legend says a Mother Dragon and her children spat out jewels that became the islands.

Official Routes and the Bay Fee

The bay is not free to enter. Quang Ninh runs numbered sightseeing routes, VHL1 to VHL8, each with its own government fee that is separate from any cruise price.

The Official Routes

On 26 February 2025 the Quang Ninh People's Council renamed the five old routes as VHL1 to VHL5 and added VHL6, VHL7 and VHL8, under Resolution No. 51/2025/NQ-HDND. VHL1 to VHL5 start from Ha Long International Cruise Port, and VHL8 starts at Tuan Chau International Marina or Ha Long International Cruise Port. The fees below come from guide sources and the Quang Ninh board notices, printed in dong as issued.

One fee index lists the day ticket as VND 290,000 including a VND 40,000 port fee, so the base figure and the all-in figure differ by source.

The Overnight Fee and Who Pays What

The overnight ticket on route 2 costs VND 550,000 for one night and VND 750,000 for two nights. Children under 1.2 m or under 7 years go free, and ages 7 to under 16 get a 20 percent discount, though these child rules come from a secondary guide rather than the board page. The ticket price is the same for foreigners and Vietnamese citizens.

This fee is a government charge, separate from the cruise operator's price. Some listings fold it in and some do not: the Deluxe Day Cruise from Hanoi includes all Ha Long Bay entrance fees in its $40 price, while the Day Cruise with Surprise Cave charges the Ha Long Bay entrance fee of $12.74 per person on top of its $23 base, so $35.74 all in. From 1 January 2026 the Cat Ba bays admission for Lan Ha is VND 120,000 per adult and VND 60,000 per child, and how that combines with the Quang Ninh ticket on the linked routes was not found in any source read.

Caves, Islands and Villages on the Way

The numbered routes thread between caves, viewpoints and old fishing villages, and most cruises visit two or three stops in a day. Here is what each one is, and which trip on this page goes there. The two busiest stops have their own pages: Sung Sot Cave and Ti Top Island.

Sung Sot Cave

Sung Sot, or Surprise, Cave lies on Bo Hon Island and has two main chambers covering about 10,000 square metres. It sits about 20 m above sea level, reached by a staircase of about 50 steps, and a visit takes roughly 40 to 50 minutes. The Day Cruise with Kayaking visits it on its afternoon loop from Tuan Chau.

Ti Top Island

Ti Top covers 3.7 hectares, is named after Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov, and its summit viewpoint stands about 110 metres high with a crescent white-sand beach below. Guides disagree on the stair count: one says nearly 400 steps, others say 420, 427 or about 450. Boat landings run from 7:20 to 16:00. The Day Cruise with Surprise Cave stops here for the climb or a swim.

Luon Cave

Luon Cave is a low archway of about 30 metres that you pass through by kayak or bamboo boat to reach a hidden lagoon. It is one of the eight approved kayak zones on the bay. The Luxury Day Cruise with Buffet offers kayaking or a bamboo boat here on both of its cruise options.

Thien Cung and Dau Go Caves

Thien Cung, the Heavenly Palace, sits near Dau Go Cave on Dau Go Island, about 3 km from Tuan Chau Island, and was officially opened to tourists on 1 May 1998. Dau Go, the Wooden Stakes cave, covers about 5,000 square metres in three chambers with an entrance about 17 m wide and 12 m high, and it has bigger chambers with less coloured lighting than Thien Cung. Both sit on the official VHL1 and VHL5 routes that leave Ha Long International Cruise Port.

Floating Fishing Villages

Cua Van, about 20 km from Tuan Chau pier, was one of the bay's four main fishing villages, and about 1,600 people lived on the water before Quang Ninh moved most residents ashore from 2014. The Cua Van Floating Cultural Centre is now a stop on VHL3, and Vung Vieng is a key stop in Bai Tu Long Bay. The Bai Tu Long Bay Small Boat Cruise sails that quieter water.

Cat Ba Island

Cat Ba is the largest island in Lan Ha Bay, about 50 km from Hai Phong and 150 km from Hanoi, and UNESCO named it a Biosphere Reserve in 2004. Its caves feature on several Lan Ha itineraries, including Trung Trang and Quan Y caves. The 3-Day Lan Ha Bay Cruise visits Trung Trang Cave and adds a bike ride to Viet Hai village, a settlement of about 80 households inside the national park.

Hanoi to the Harbour

The harbour is 150 to 170 km from Hanoi and takes 2 to 3.5 hours by road, so the transfer matters as much as the boat. This is where the cruises leave from and how the road works. Every way from Hanoi, with fares, is on Hanoi to Ha Long Bay.

Which Harbour Your Boat Uses

The harbours compared on where they sit and which boats use them. Figures come from port and tourism sources. Most day cruises and many overnight cruises board at Tuan Chau International Marina, which has two ports, Port 1 for day cruises and Port 2, the International Passenger Port, for overnight cruises.

Ha Long International Cruise Port in Bai Chay serves VHL1 to VHL5 and the big international ships. Bai Tu Long boats use Hon Gai on the other side of the Bai Chay Bridge, which is 903 metres long by one guide's figure.

The Road from Hanoi

Ha Long Bay is in Quang Ninh province, not part of Hanoi. The Hanoi, Hai Phong, Ha Long expressway route is about 150 km and the old National Highway 18 route about 165 km, out of a total range of roughly 150 to 170 km depending on the route. By car or limousine the trip takes about 2 to 2.5 hours on expressways, and buses take 2.5 to 3.5 hours.

Buses leave Hanoi's My Dinh station roughly every 30 to 45 minutes, and limousine vans run door to door in 2.5 to 3 hours. The nearest airports are Van Don at about 50 km from Ha Long, Cat Bi in Hai Phong at about 70 km and Noi Bai in Hanoi at about 160 km. A Hanoi day trip means roughly five hours or more in the vehicle, which is why some travellers pick an overnight cruise instead of racing back the same day.

Where Ocean Cruise Ships Dock

International ocean cruise ships dock at Ha Long International Cruise Port, which has a 524 m quay for two ships of up to 225,000 GT each and a terminal of 13,500 square metres over three floors. The first ship to call was Celebrity Millennium on 27 November 2018 with about 2,000 passengers and 1,000 crew, and commercial operation began on 30 December 2018. Shore excursion passengers can join bay cruises from the port area, and one listing here, the Day Cruise with Surprise Cave, lets cruise ship passengers walk about 5 minutes to its pickup point.

Weather, Fog and Storm Closures

The bay sails all year, but fog, rain and typhoons change what you see and occasionally close the water. The temperatures and rainfall below come from Hai Phong WMO data as quoted in one guide. Month by month figures are on Ha Long Bay weather.

Temperature and Rain by Season

Winter is cool and dry with morning fog, summer is hot and wet, and the shoulder seasons are the calmest. Rainfall in May to September runs 202 to 361 mm a month with August the wettest, against only 21 to 40 mm a month from December to February.

MonthsTemperatureRainWhat to expect
December to FebruaryAbout 15 to 22 degrees C21 to 40 mm a monthCool mornings, light fog on the water, warm layers needed
March and AprilAbout 18 to 27 degrees CNot statedWarming up, one guide's best months begin here
May to SeptemberAbout 24 to 33 degrees C202 to 361 mm a month, August wettestHot and humid, swimming water 23 to 30 degrees C, typhoon risk from July
October and NovemberAbout 19 to 30 degrees CNot statedClear and calm, counted among the best months by one guide

Typhoons, Fog and the Best Months

Typhoon season runs July to September for the bay, with August the highest risk, and tropical storm risk can extend into October. Winter fog is common and can cut visibility on cold mornings, then it lifts by midday, so a foggy start rarely ruins the day. The best months are October to November and March to May by one guide's view, which matches the temperature table above.

In the hot months the swimming water sits at 23 to 30 degrees C, which is when the beach at Ti Top Island and the kayak stops are at their best.

Who Closes the Bay and What Happens Next

The Ha Long Bay Management Board and the Inland Waterway Port Authority decide on boat suspensions, not cruise operators, and cancellations are cited at winds of Beaufort level 6 or higher. Recent closures show how this works in practice. Tourism halted 7 to 9 September 2024 for Typhoon Yagi, which sank about 30 vessels at boat locks along the bay, and boats resumed normal operation on 13 September 2024.

On 13 June 2025 for Storm Wutip, all overnight boats were suspended and day boats had to return passengers by 18:00. On 20 July 2025 all tourist boats were banned from departing as Typhoon Wipha approached. After Storm Maysak weakened, the bay reopened at 14:00 on 5 July 2026, with most departures that day being overnight cruises because day sightseeing time was too short.

When the board cancels for weather, operators often offer a full refund or free rebooking. Licensed boats must carry life jackets, and the capsizing of the Wonder Sea near Dau Go Cave on 19 July 2025 in a sudden thunderstorm, which killed 39 people, is the reason a closure order should be respected.

Before You Book a Ha Long Bay Cruise

Four things separate one Ha Long Bay junk boat cruise from another: day trip or overnight, which bay the boat sails, whether the Hanoi bus is in the price, and what the from-price leaves out. These points follow from the listings on this page.

Do

  • Do check whether the Hanoi bus is included, because the harbour is roughly 150 to 170 km from Hanoi and the drive takes 2 to 3.5 hours each way. The Deluxe Day Cruise from Hanoi has the bus and entrance fees in the $40 price, while the Luxury Day Cruise with Buffet charges $15 per person extra for the bus.
  • Do read the extras line before you compare from-prices, because they can differ a lot. The Day Cruise with Surprise Cave costs $23 base plus a $12.74 entrance fee paid before check-in, so $35.74 all in, and the Balcony Suite Overnight Cruise adds a $10 peak surcharge from October 1 to April 30 on top of the Hanoi transfer of $30 by shuttle or $35 by limousine.
  • Do book free cancellation where you can get it, because summer storms close the bay. Most listings here refund in full up to 24 hours before departure. Two do not: the Bhaya Classic Overnight Cruise and the Oriental Sails Junk Cruise give a full refund only 6 or more days before, 50 percent between 2 and 6 days, nothing inside 2 days.
  • Do pick your bay deliberately, because the water changes the trip. Bai Tu Long is the least crowded of the three bays and Ha Long the busiest, and the Bai Tu Long Bay Small Boat Cruise sails the quiet one on a boat of up to 25 guests.
  • Do check where the bus collects you, because pickup rules differ by listing. The Serenity Lan Ha Bay Day Cruise includes pickup from Hanoi, Hai Phong or Cat Ba, while the 3-Day Lan Ha Bay Cruise charges $25 per person for the round trip.

Don't

  • Don't assume every boat is a wooden junk, because almost all boats on the bay today are engine-powered cruise boats built in junk style, often steel, with sails kept for show. The Oriental Sails Junk Cruise is the only listing on this page that describes a traditional-style junk.
  • Don't expect a day trip to leave much time on the water, because about five hours or more of the day goes on the road. A day cruise boards around late morning and the bus is back in Hanoi around 9 PM on several listings.
  • Don't assume the lowest from-price is the cheapest trip, because extras add up. Kayaking at Luon Cave costs extra on some day cruises, and the 3-Day Lan Ha Bay Cruise adds government VAT of $35 per person and a $25 peak charge from October 1 to April 30.
  • Don't plan the cruise for the day before an international flight, because the bay authority can suspend boats at Beaufort level 6 or higher. Operators often offer a full refund or free rebooking when the board cancels for weather, but a closure on your last day leaves no room to rebook.

Is a Ha Long Bay Junk Boat Cruise Worth It

An honest look at what the money buys and where the friction sits, using the listings and figures on this page.

What we genuinely like

  • The karst scenery is the point, and you only get it from the water: about 1,969 islands and islets, many rising 50 to 100 metres above the bay.
  • Caves and a kayak or bamboo boat stop are on most itineraries, from Sung Sot Cave and Luon Cave on Ha Long day boats to Dark and Bright Cave on Lan Ha routes.
  • Day cruises start low: the cheapest all-in day trip here is $35.74, and a full day with lunch runs $39 to $53.
  • Overnight cruises start at $120.00 for 2 days and 1 night, and the pick, a traditional-style junk, is $135.00.
  • Quieter water is one booking away: Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long cruises leave from the same harbours.

The honest downsides

  • A day trip means roughly five hours or more in a vehicle for 2 to 3.5 hours each way to the harbour.
  • Ha Long Bay itself is busy, especially June to August and at weekends, and Bai Tu Long is the least crowded of the three bays.
  • From-prices leave things out: Hanoi transfers of $10 to $35 per person, a $12.74 entrance fee on one listing, peak surcharges of $10 to $25, and government VAT of $35 on the 3-day cruise.
  • Storms close the bay. Typhoon season runs July to September with August the highest risk, and all boats can be suspended by the bay management board.

Who it's NOT for: Anyone who cannot face about five hours on the road in a day should book an overnight cruise or skip the day trip.

Which Ha Long Bay Junk Boat Cruise Fits You

Six common situations, each matched to a listing or a section on this page.

If You want the cheapest possible day on the water from Hanoi.

Take the Day Cruise with Surprise Cave at $23 base plus a $12.74 entrance fee, $35.74 all in, the lowest price on this page.

If You want a real junk boat rather than a junk-style cruise boat.

Book the Oriental Sails Junk Cruise, the only listing here describing a traditional-style junk, $135.00 for 2 days and 1 night with up to 20 guests.

If You want everything settled in one price with no surprises.

The Deluxe Day Cruise from Hanoi puts the Hanoi bus and the entrance fees in the $40 price.

If You have more than a day and want the quiet bays.

Compare the overnight section: the Bai Tu Long Bay Small Boat Cruise at $158.00 sails the least crowded bay, or see all overnight cruises.

If You are deciding how much time the bay deserves.

Read day cruises from Hanoi against the overnight listings, since a day trip spends about five hours or more on the road.

If You are traveling in typhoon season.

Read weather and storm closures and book a cruise with 24-hour free cancellation, such as the 2-Day Lan Ha Balcony Cruise.

We had the best time at this cruise. Everything was so wonderful but what really made it so special was the staff. Everyone was so kind and helpful that we were just blown away. Especially Mrs.Lam and Mr.Kiet in F&B who went above and beyond for us and really made our trip extra special. We would highly highly recommend this experience to everyone.

A very great experience. It's definitely 100% worth doing the three-day tour every time. (That's what I say, and I was skeptical beforehand)

Ha Long Bay Junk Boat Cruise: Your Questions

What is the best Ha Long Bay junk boat cruise?

The pick is the Oriental Sails Junk Cruise, $135.00 for 2 days and 1 night with up to 20 guests, rated 4.7 from 402 reviews, and the only listing on this page that describes a traditional-style junk. Almost every other boat on the bay is an engine-powered cruise boat built in junk style.

How much does a Ha Long Bay cruise cost?

Day cruises run from $35.74 all in for the Day Cruise with Surprise Cave up to $53 for a 7-hour Lan Ha trip, and overnight cruises start at $120.00 for the Bhaya Classic Overnight Cruise. All prices are per person, and transfers or surcharges can add $10 to $35 on top.

Is a day cruise enough or should I stay overnight?

A day cruise works if you accept about five hours or more on the road for a few hours on the water. An overnight cruise buys sunset, a morning Tai Chi session and quieter anchorages from $120.00, and the 2-day format is the better fit for most visitors.

Where do cruise ships dock at Halong Bay?

International ocean cruise ships dock at Ha Long International Cruise Port in Bai Chay, which has a 524 m quay for ships up to 225,000 GT. Tour boats use Tuan Chau International Marina, which has two ports, one for day cruises and one for overnight cruises. See the harbours section.

Is Halong Bay part of Hanoi?

No. Ha Long Bay is in Quang Ninh province, not part of Hanoi, and the harbour sits roughly 150 to 170 km from Hanoi, 2 to 3.5 hours away. The getting there section covers the routes.

What happens if a storm closes the bay?

The Ha Long Bay Management Board suspends boats, with cancellations cited at Beaufort force 6 or higher, and during Typhoon Wipha all tourist boats were banned from departing. Operators often offer a full refund or free rebooking when the board cancels for weather. Details are in the weather section.
